Welcome to downtown Puerto Vallarta

Viejo Vallarta, or “OLD TOWN”, 15 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta International airport, is where the nightlife starts and many of Puerto Vallarta´s landmarks are located. This zone runs from Parque Hidalgo south to the Rio Cuale Bridge: The magical heart of Puerto Vallarta is the town square (Plaza Principal) of this historic center, wich should not be missed by any visitor. Here you can observe the traditions and customs of the typical Mexican pueblo, combined with the excitement of an international tourist destination.

Towering over the main plaza you will fin the city Hall (Palacion Municipal) and in the center the picturesque bandstand where the municipal band gives free concerts every Thursday and Sunday nights.

This is also the center for local festivities such as concerts, mimes, puppets, folkloric dances, etc. in Los Arcos Open Air Teather; fireworks, parades and special food booths for national holidays, such as Semana Sana (Easter Week), Labor Day (May 1), cinco de mayo, Independence day (sept 16), Day of the dead (Nov 1-2), Revolution day (Nov 20), Processions to the church of Guadalupe (Dec 1-12), Christmas and New Years.

The commercial area of Puerto Vallarta grew up around the central plaza, so here you will fin the best restaurants, the major art galleries, and the majority of jewelry, craft and gift shops, the boutiques of typical clothing, leather goods and accessories, shops filled with blown glass, ceramics, Huichol Indian art, masks, musical instruments and unique collectibles from all over mexico.

A tourist information office in city Hall will give you free maps and tourists information. A monthly calendar of events published by the Old Town Merchants Association.

Leading the way for events are the weekly “Old Town Art Walks” now having completed their eighth full season (Nov thru April), with seventeen participating galleries.
